Gardening in Lind-Bohanon: Dig into It!

The Lind Community Garden Story: 51st and Dupont Aves N

This important community asset was a project of the Lind Bohanon Neighborhood Association and funded by the Neighborhood Revitalization Program. This exciting project has helped refresh the look of Jenny Lind School, brought the community together in a new way, spawned a new walking club and has fostered many new partnerships.

Stop by and see this great community asset!

LBNA also has a rich tradition of honoring our community’s history and heritage. As school funding decreases, we realize exterior property maintenance is among the first budget cuts. As dandelions blow in the wind and over grown paths take their place, the image of Jenny Lind school is affected. We are hopeful; the continued success of the Lind Community Garden will reinvigorate and energize our community. The garden sits in the shadows of the 25-foot tall pine trees that were planted and where another community garden once stood during Jenny Lind Principal Art Sloth’s tenure over 25 years ago.

With this garden we want to help increase the initial impressions of every student and parent that Jenny Lind is a safe and productive school and upheld highly in the hearts of community residents. Along with talk of vegetables, flowers, and weather, this garden is intended to help impress potential families as they consider attending Jenny Lind School as a “world class school in a world class neighborhood”. It will offer an opportunity for teachers, community education and their students to interact with the on-site garden, reduce maintenance for Jenny Lind School and “grow” our partnerships.

We are grateful to our growing partners on this project: Minneapolis Public Schools, Principal Aura Wharton-Beck and Jenny Lind School, Sandi McDonald and Jenny Lind Community Education, Teachers Mr. Thomas, Ms. Hubert, Mr. McKissack, Volunteers of America Hmong Elders, and the over thirty resident volunteer gardeners from our community.

We have several volunteers helping with maintaining other gardens on the school grounds and in the community. If you’d like to find out more about how to adopt a local garden and help maintain it or even to just tour them, check out our Garden brochure or contact us at 612-588-7641 or lindbohanonna@aol.com.

The Lind-Bohanon Neighborhood Association (LBNA), established in 1997, is a 501 © 3 non-profit neighborhood-based planning, organizing, and education focused group. Our community is a primarily low-to-moderate-income working class community on the northern edge gateway neighborhood of Minneapolis.  LBNA’s mission is to protect and promote neighborhood interests and the health, safety and general welfare of the residents within LBNA’s geographic jurisdiction in a non-partisan, educational, and cooperative manner.

Lyndale Ave N Gateway Sign garden: 49th and Lyndale Aves N:

This sign sits on the northwest corner of a heavily traveled intersection of 49th and Lyndale Aves N in North Minneapolis. Established in 2002, this LBNA project was funded through the Neighborhood Revitalization Program, a MCDA Neighborhood Initiatives Project grant, and MNDot Grant. It was designed by Landform.

This garden was the recipent of a Metro Blooms award 2009! LBNA thanks the volunteer team of Ann and Liz for maintaining this signature community sign and garden.

This signature gateway sign was designed to incorporate color and a river theme that would continue all along the Lyndale Ave N commercial corridor and eventually connect to the Camden Bridge and Grand Rounds trail. It sits on property owned by MNDot and is insured by the City of Minneapolis while the neighborhood association partners to maintain it.

A Japanese Lilac was added in 2003 behind the sign as a signature tree of the 30 trees that would be added on Lyndale Ave N as part of the LBNA "Leafing Lyndale" project.
